Developmental delay or Delayed milestones
Developmental delay is estimated to be present in about 10% of children. It is possible to recognize severe developmental disorder early in infancy. Speech impairment, hyperactivity and emotional disturbances are often not detected till the child is 3 to 4 yrs old. Learning disabilities are not picked up till the child starts schooling.
Behavioral development of child depends on a variety of mutually interactive factors such as herediatary endowment, biological integrity, physical and psychosocial milieu and emotional stimulation. Development may be impaired due to variety of factors. These include
Prenatal illness like infections, use of drugs, toxemia of pregnancy.
Bad obstetric history such ad previous miscarriages or still births.
Perinatal factors such as obstetric complications, prematurity, low birth weight and multiple pregnancy, neonatal seizures, intraventicula hemorrhage, septicemia, meningitis, hyperbillrubinemia and hypoxia.
Social factors such as undernutrition, low socio economic level and poor social history such as teen age mother and mentally retreaded parent.
Established disease including chromosomal anamalies, deafness & blindness.
Any disorder of nutrition causing a lack of necessary or proper food substances in the body or improper absorption and distribution of them. Malnutrition may be due to a deficient diet or deficient break down, assimilation or utilization of food.
